The ILL is modernising and developing instrumentation and infrastructure around its neutron source in the framework of the Endurance programme. Phase 1 of Endurance is currently running from 2016 to 2019 with a second phase foreseen to run between 2020 and 2023. A shortlist of new or upgraded instrument concepts was established in 2014 with the first projects launched as part of Endurance Phase 1. It is timely to review the remaining projects and make a further call to the neutron user community for propositions for new or upgraded instrumentation. One focus of Endurance 2 will be the upgrade of the Vercors side of the ILL 7 guide hall with the renewal of one or more cold neutron guides, complementing the renewal of thermal neutron guides under Endurance 1. Potential beam positions are therefore available for both cold- and thermal-neutron instrumentation.

The typical budget of ILL instrument projects is in the range of 1 to 7 M€ and, while the number of projects to be considered within Endurance 2 is not fixed at this time, the total budget is expected to be in the range of 20 to 30 M€. The number of ILL user instruments should remain constant with the creation of new instruments balanced by the closure of existing instruments or their transformation into CRG’s. Propositions for new CRG instruments are also welcome. Your expressions of interest are crucial in helping us define our requirements for scientific and support infrastructure for the coming years.

ILL is inviting expressions of interest for flagship instruments to exploit the full scientific potential of the ILL’s high flux reactor and help define a coherent scientific strategy and capabilities within the landscape of existing and emerging neutron sources.

You are invited to send your proposals for instrumentation projects to Charles Dewhurst () by 27th February 2017. Proposals should describe briefly the instrument, its scientific case and the timescale for construction and operation. If, as an external team, you intend to inject resources (staff and/or equipment) then please state this clearly. An indication of the spatial footprint and other infrastructure and resources required should be made clear. Your proposal will be evaluated in close collaboration with the Scientific Council. After a pre-selection process, ILL will launch pre-studies to evaluate the feasibility and successful projects will be presented to the Scientific Council for endorsement and subsequent incorporation into Endurance 2.
