Update on Neutron Scattering in Canada

At this time, Government direction remains to close Canada's source of neutrons, the NRU reactor, at the end of March 2018. Regular production of one isotope, Mo-99, will stop in October 2016, while all others will continue in production. After October 2016, the NRU is expected to continue operating at full power for its science missions, including continuation of the Canadian Neutron Beam Centre (CNBC). The CNBC operation is expected to maintain full operation until the NRU shuts down, after which there will a reasonable period to complete data analysis, publish results, and conduct any other activities needed for orderly wind-down.

The community of neutron beam users is therefore invited to propose challenging experiments, encourage young researchers to visit and learn everything they can, and be alert for opportunities to participate in the national conversation about the future of neutron scattering in Canada.

A neutron scattering summer school will be offered jointly by CINS and the CNBC in the week of September 12-16. Watch for details to appear soon.

Proposals for beam time are invited for any of the CNBC's six beamlines:

  • C2 High Resolution Powder Diffractometer
  • C5 Polarized Beam Triple-Axis Spectrometer
  • D3 Reflectometer
  • E3 Triple-axis Spectrometer
  • L3 Stress-Scanning Diffractometer
  • N5 Triple-Axis Spectrometer
