ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY/ISIS NEUTRON FACILITY
POSTDOCTORAL POSITION

The Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking
candidates for a postdoctoral research associate position in neutron
reflectometry. The successful candidate will be located predominantly at
the ISIS pulsed neutron facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in
the UK. The research involves using the polarized neutron reflectometer
CRISP and other state-of-the-art facilities at ISIS to study the magnetism
at the surface of materials and in thin films and multilayers. The
position-sensitive detector of the reflectometer permits the simultaneous
measurement of the off-specular, as well as the specular scattering. In
turn, this enables the determination of the lateral dimension of magnetic
domains, as well as the diffraction spectrum of two-dimensional patterns.
With the addition of a polarization analyzer the orientation of the
layer-by-layer magnetization can be defined with high precision.

The focus of this work includes existing and new research programs at both
ISIS and Argonne in the area of magnetism in constrained geometries. The
studies will cover a wide range of artificially patterned materials as well
as the evolution of the magnetic response of thin films in varying external
magnetic fields. The issues to be studied include: the magnetocrystalline
anisotropy, as due to the crystal structure of a film and its templating on
different substrates; the detailed magnetic response of nanostructures -
from nanocomposite to arrays of dots; exchange bias effects.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or
related subject. Experience in magnetism of thin films or neutron
scattering is preferred. Postdoctoral appointees at Argonne must have
received their Ph.D. within the last three years. The deadline for
applications is July 30, 2001 or until the position is filled. Please send
applications, including a resume and publication list to Dr. Gian P.
Felcher, Materials Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne,
IL 60439 (Felcher at anl.gov). Further information can also be obtained from
Dr. Felcher or Dr.Sean Langridge (s.langridge at rl.ac.uk). Information on
CRISP can be found on the following web site: http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk.

Argonne National Laboratory is an affirmative action/equal opportunity
institution. Women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
