PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
INSTRUMENT DEVELOPMENT AND CONDENSED MATTER RESEARCH

The Department of Physics at Penn State is looking to fill a postdoctoral
research associate position focusing on the development of a next generation
inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer and neutron scattering studies in
condensed matter physics. Instrument development efforts are centered
around the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) being developed for the
Spallation Neutron Source Project (SNS). The CNCS is a $13M project to
design and construct a high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering
spectrometer with a large-area highly pixilated detector for the SNS. The
successful candidate will be involved in design of the spectrometer
components, evaluation of the instruments performance and development of
software to support the scientific programs for the instrument. Further
information on the instrument can be obtained at
http://sokolii.phys.psu.edu/CNCSdesign . The successful candidate will also
have the opportunity to pursue inelastic neutron scattering studies of
condensed matter systems in collaboration with members of the Instrument
Development Team. The research areas of the team members include quantum
liquids, magnetic systems, polymers and dynamics in confined systems.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics with experience in inelastic neutron
scattering, preferably at Spallation sources. Deadline for applications is
August 1st, 2002 or until the position is filled. Please send applications,
including a vita, statement of research, and at least two letters of
recommendation, to Prof. Paul Sokol, Box I, Department of Physics, 104 Davey
Laboratory, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802
USA. Applicants may contact Prof. Paul Sokol (tele: 814-863-5811 e-mail:
pes4 at psu.edu) for further information regarding the position. AA/EOE
