                      Announcement for

Symposium for "Canadian Participation at the Spallation Neutron Source"
                             and
the 2003 CINS/ICDN Annual General Meeting

Friday, October 17, 10:00 AM - 5:15 PM
Saturday, October 18, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Council Chambers, Gilmour Hall, McMaster University

McMaster University is pleased to host a Symposium on the Frontiers of
Neutron Scattering as a celebration for the launch of the $15M CFI
International Access Fund Award "Canadian Participation at the Spallation
Neutron Source".

The symposium will feature national and intenational experts in the
application of neutron scattering to topical problems in materials science
and the speakers will include:

Ian Anderson SNS
Robert J. Birgeneau University of Toronto
Bruce D. Gaulin McMaster University
Tom Holden Northern Stress Ltd.
Thom Mason SNS
Stephen E. Nagler Oak Ridge National Lab
Toby Perring Rutherford Appleton Lab, UK
John Root NRC, Chalk River
David Strangway CFI
Xun Li Wang SNS
Mary Anne White Dalhousie University

The symposium will finish with lunch on Saturday, October 18, and be
followed by the Canadian Institute for Neutron Scattering/ Institut
canadien de la diffusion des neutrons (CINS/ICDN) Annual General Meeting.

This will be an exciting opportunity to find out about the transformative
new opportunities for materials research associated with the Spallation
Neutron Source, the $1.3B US next generation neutron source nearing
completion at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and the plans
for Canadian involvement enabled by the "Canadian Participation at SNS"
CFI award.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: VERY IMPORTANT

We are pleased to provide lunch on both the Friday and Saturday, as well
as a banquet on the Friday evening to ALL the participants at the symposium.

For planning purposes, please let us know if you will be attending the
symposium and CINS/ICDN meeting, and if you'll be our guest for:

Lunch on Friday, October 17 (Yes / No)
Banquet on Friday evening, October 17 (Yes / No)
Lunch on Saturday, October 18 (Yes / No)

We can also offer limited financial support for participants attending
from outside of southern Ontario. A preference will be given to more
junior scientists. Please tell the conference secretary (below) that you
wish to be considered for this support.

PLEASE RESPOND BY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10 to the symposium secretary,
Randi DeYoung at deyoung at univmail.cis.mcmaster.ca

You can also contact Randi deYoung at 905-525-9140 x23531 for further
information.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please plan to take part in as much of the symposium and CINS/ICDN
meetings as possible. We will be discussing the nature and future of
Canada's neutron scattering infrastructure, and it is very important to
have YOUR input!

Note also that Hamilton is well served by flights into both the Hamilton
airport (for Westjet flights) as well as Pearson Airport in Toronto (for
Air Canada, Westjet, and many other airlines).

Hope to see you in Hamilton, October 17 and 18!

Sincerely yours;

Bruce D. Gaulin
