Vacancy for Diffraction Group Leader at ILL

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's
leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL
operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering
intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. The Institute
welcomes 1500 visiting scientists per year to carry out world class
research in solid state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology,
chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded primarily by its three founder
members: France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed
scientific collaboration agreements with Austria, the Czech Republic,
Italy, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Sweden.

The ILL invites applications for the position of Leader for the Diffraction
Group in its Science Division. The post represents an excellent opportunity
for an outstanding scientist to develop his/her scientific stature and
interact with leading scientists from around the world.

The Diffraction Group is organised within the Science Division and operates
ten instruments exploiting the full spectrum of thermal and hot neutrons
available at ILL. The Diffraction Group has a long history in the
development of innovative neutron instrumentation, including polarized
neutrons. An ambitious programme of instrumentation renewal has been
launched to boost capabilities of the ILL instruments with new methods and
modern technologies. Diffraction instruments at ILL bring neutrons to a
wide community of users in chemistry, environmental and earth sciences,
materials engineering, etc. The highly motivated Group Leader will:
    * promote the use of diffraction methods in all fields of science;
    * anticipate and propose technical developments for these methods;
    * liaise with other instrument groups at ILL and at other neutron sources;
    * have an active personal research programme;
    * encourage in-house research within the Diffraction Group;
    * supervise the scientific and technical staff in the Diffraction Group.
The successful candidate will:
    * have a distinguished research record in chemistry and materials science;
    * be experienced in diffraction methods and neutron experimental
techniques;
    * be knowledgeable about other experimental methods;
    * be experienced in scientific, personnel and budget management;
    * possess a full command of written and spoken English (and, if
possible, a basic command of French).
The successful candidate will be offered a permanent contract. In addition
to a competitive salary, certain benefits (reimbursement of removal
expenses, adaptation allowance, etc.) may be offered.
Further information on the post can be obtained from Dr. C. Vettier.

Letters of application with curriculum vitae, a list of publications and
the names of two academic referees must be received by 28.05.2005.
Applications should be sent, quoting reference 05/11, to:
