USANS INSTRUMENT SCIENTIST
NIST CENTER FOR NEUTRON RESEARCH
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY

The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking candidates for an
Ultra-Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (USANS) Instrument Scientist
position. USANS extends the SANS accessible Q range by two orders of
magnitude. The NCNR USANS is the world's leading USANS facility
(http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/usans/index.html) and is part of an
instrumentation suite which also consists of two 30-m long pinhole
geometry instruments. Combined, these instruments span four orders of
magnitude in Q-space corresponding to structural features in materials
ranging from 1nm to over 20,000 nm.

The NCNR has broad interests in the nano- to microscale structures in
materials; in advancing measurement capabilities and analysis methods; in
promoting the use of these facilities by the general scientific community;
and in maintaining these facilities at peak performance.
http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/programs/sans/scientists This position will
allow the successful candidate an exciting opportunity to help develop
their own scientific program taking advantage of this new capability
within the context of a world class neutron user facility. Collaborations
with visiting scientists, NCNR staff, and other scientists at NIST are
nurtured and highly encouraged providing a rich and rewarding scientific
atmosphere.

The position requires a Ph.D. in Materials Science or related field and
excellent experimental, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience in microstructure or macromolecular structure characterization
using x-ray or neutron diffraction techniques is highly desirable.
Responsibilities include aiding visiting researchers in conducting
experiments, instrument maintenance and development, driving the
scientific program of the instrument, and developing an independent
research program. Appointment will initially be for two years with the
possibility of extension for up to two additional years. Salary is in the
range from $52,000 to $60,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
Expressions of interest along with a resume should be sent to:
