Vacancies for Research Scientists at ILL

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's 
leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL 
operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering 
intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments.  The Institute 
welcomes 1500 visiting scientists per year to carry out world class 
research in solid state physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, 
chemistry and fundamental physics.  Funded primarily by its 3 founder 
members, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed 
scientific collaboration agreements with 7 other European countries.
The Science Division currently has vacancies in its Time-Of-Flight and High 
Resolution Group for 2 RESEARCH  SCIENTISTS (M/F).

These posts represent an excellent opportunity for young postdoctoral 
scientists to develop expertise, broaden experience and interact with 
leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more 
experienced scientists able to obtain a secondment period from their home 
institute will also be considered.

1/ Co-responsible for IN16 spectrometer (ref. 05/22):
The successful candidate will be co-responsible for the IN16 and IN10 
backscattering spectrometers. Neutron scattering techniques offer optimum 
energy resolutions and are particularly well suited to low frequency 
excitation studies or quasi-elastic scattering. Their research applications 
are varied and include soft matter, biology and solid-state physics.

2/ Co-responsible for IN4 spectrometer (ref. 05/23):
The successful candidate will be co-responsible for the IN4 thermal-neutron 
time-of-flight spectrometer. This instrument is used for spectroscopic 
studies of condensed matter in the thermal neutron range (1-100 meV) which 
is particularly suited to research into disordered systems.

The ILL is seeking highly motivated scientists with a Ph.D. in chemistry or 
physics. In addition to carrying out their own active research programme, 
these scientists will be responsible for assisting ILL's visiting 
scientists with their experiments and will also play a role in running and 
developing the instruments. Duties will also include the promotion of 
scientific partnerships in their field of research.
Knowledge of neutron scattering techniques would be appreciated; given the 
relative complexity of these, an interest in instrumentation, computing and 
development is essential. Applications from non-specialists are 
nevertheless explicitly being encouraged.

Successful candidates will be offered a fixed-term contract, the duration 
of which will under no circumstances exceed five (5) years. In addition to 
a competitive salary, certain benefits (partial reimbursement of removal 
expenses, adaptation allowance, etc.) may be offered.
