Scholarship and Poster Deadlines Extended

For

SNS-HFIR User Meeting on October 11-13, 2005

Update: After accepting almost 30 requests for scholarships and a
similar number of posters for the SNS - HFIR User Meeting, we are
extending the deadlines for both posters and scholarships to September
27. The ARCS instrument [Wide-Angle Fermi Chopper Spectrometer] has
been added to the list of Instrument Team meetings. The agenda is
firming up with great speakers; see
http://www.sns.gov/workshops/sns_hfir_users/index.shtml for details.

Users of the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor
will meet on October 11-13, 2005 at the ORNL Research Support Center.
We anticipate this meeting will generate enthusiasm for neutron
scattering through personal interactions with SNS and HFIR staff.
Scientists and engineers should attend if they want to learn of the
capabilities of SNS and HFIR instruments and offer feedback on the
instruments and user processes.

Special sessions will be held on instrument techniques to be utilized in
the neutron scattering programs at SNS and HFIR and include diffraction,
quasi-elastic neutron scattering, small angle neutron scattering,
engineering diffraction, inelastic techniques, and reflectometry. Each
of these sessions will feature science talks as well as a description of
the capabilities of the relevant Oak Ridge instruments.

The user meeting will include updates on the HFIR, SNS and the CNMS, and
discussion of the initial experiments proposed on the first three SNS
instruments. We want to receive feedback on both the user processes and
related user issues, such as training, site access, sample management
and the proposal system. Timetables for instrument readiness and power
ramp-up will be provided, along with the process for proposing
experiments. Synergies among SNS, HFIR, the Center for Nanophase
Materials Sciences (CNMS), and other ORNL groups focusing on theory and
modeling will be described. Tours will be provided of the SNS, HFIR,
and CNMS.

Instrument Advisory Teams (IATs) were formed around each of the first
five SNS instruments by prospective users several years ago. It is
expected that members of these teams will now form the nucleus of a
group of "friendly" users who will aid in the commissioning process of
these instruments. The SNS/HFIR User Meeting is an excellent
opportunity to learn about the detailed status and plans for these
instruments and for additional interested researchers to join IATs.
Topics for discussion will include the commissioning schedule and will
begin the process of identifying initial experiments that may be carried
out during the "friendly user" period.

Of particular interest to those not familiar with neutron scattering are
the three half-day workshops to be held on the last day of the User
Meeting that will be directed toward new users and will focus on:
Reflectometry; SANS; and Nanomaterials and Neutrons (what value can
neutrons bring to your nanomaterials).
