*Los Alamos Neutron Science Center Call for Proposals*
Run Cycle Beginning October 1, 2006

You are invited to submit a proposal to apply for beam time at the Los
Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) for the run cycle starting
*October 1, 2006 and ending December 23, 2006*. The *deadline for
submitting the proposals is 8:00 a.m. (0800) Mountain Daylight Time,
Monday, July 3, 2006*. Any proposals submitted after the due date will
not be reviewed by the Program Advisory Committees and must be
resubmitted for the following run cycle or as an out of cycle, rapid
access proposal. *Rapid access* proposals may be submitted at any time,
but require compelling evidence of sufficient scientific urgency to
justify special scheduling.

Instruments/flight paths available in the current call for proposals are:

*Lujan Neutron Scattering Center*

1. Polarized Beam Reflectometer (Asterix)
2. Filter Difference Spectrometer (FDS)
3. High-Intensity Powder Diffractometer (HIPD)
4. High-Pressure Preferred Orientation Diffractometer (HIPPO)
5. Low Q Diffractometer (LQD)
6. Neutron Powder Diffractometer (NPDF)
7. Protein Crystallography Station (PCS)
8. High-Resolution Chopper Spectrometer (Pharos)
9. Spectrometer for Materials Research at Temperature and Stress (SMARTS)
10. Surface Profile Analysis Reflectometer (SPEAR)

Proposals for the following instruments will be accepted, although user
support will be very limited:

11. Single Crystal Diffractometer (SCD)
12. Transmission Spectroscopy (Flight Path 5)

*Weapons Neutron Research (WNR) Facility*

1. Target 1: Flight path 5 (1FP5)
Flight path 14 (DANCE) capture reactions, fission, ?-ray measurements

2. Target 2: (Blue Room, proton irradiations)

3. Target 4: Flight Path 90L (4FP90L) fission, charged particle
reactions
Flight Path 30L (4FP30L) ICE House, single event effects
Flight path 15L (4FP15L)
Flight path 15R (4FP15R) few-body physics
Flight path 30R (4FP30R) FIGARO, (n,z) reactions
Flight path 60R (4FP60R) GEANIE

Because of their impact on the overall user program, proposals for sole
use experiments (i.e., those that require dedicated facility operation)
should be discussed with the management of WNR so that policies
associated with such experiments and the prospect of them being
accommodated can be explained.

*Proposal Guidance and Submission*
Proposals must be submitted using the process on the LANSCE website;
only proposals submitted in this manner will be accepted. To access the
proposal submission sites, log onto the LANSCE home page
(lansce.lanl.gov). On this page there are links to the Lujan Center via
Lujan Resources or to Nuclear and Neutron Science through Nuclear
Science Resources. Under Lujan Resources click on the Lujan Proposal
Submission Site to submit a proposal to be run at this facility or under
Nuclear Science Resources click on NS (WNR) Proposal Submission Site to
submit a nuclear science proposal.

Links to detailed instructions for preparing the proposals can be found
on the proposal submission sites under "Resources and Information."
Please assure that you address all of pertinent items listed under "What
Your Proposal Must Contain" so that our Program Advisory Committees that
conduct the reviews are able to judge the scientific merit of the
proposals. This also helps us to demonstrate that the beam time we
award goes to the most compelling science. We can only do this if the
proposals thoroughly address all of the necessary criteria.

Classified proposals must be submitted in hard copy. They should be
submitted to:

Los Alamos National Laboratory
Mail Station 5000
LANSCE User Office c/o MS H803
Los Alamos, NM 87545

or hand carried to TA-53, Bldg. 1, room D108.

*Student Travel Support*
Travel support is available for students to participate in an experiment
via the STONE (Student Travel Opportunities for Neutron Experiments)
Program. For information about this program go to the relevant proposal
submission site as described previously and click on the "STONE Program"
link under "Resources and Information." Instructions about how to apply
for support from the STONE program are found here.

Should you have any questions or require assistance, please contact the
LANSCE User Office by e-mail at lansce_users at lanl.gov or by telephone at
(505) 665-1010.
