The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
invites applications for a Biological Dynamics Neutron Scattering
Instrument Scientist. SNS is the most powerful short-pulse spallation
neutron source in the world. This unique facility provides opportunities
for up to 2000 researchers each year from universities, national labs,
and industry for basic and applied research and technology development.
The diverse fields of study include materials science, magnetic
materials, polymers and complex fluids, chemistry, and biology. Funded
by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, SNS began
operations in June 2006.

The successful candidate will exploit upcoming world-leading
capabilities for dynamic neutron scattering in biology at the SNS
interfaced with the work performed in ORNL's Center for Molecular
Biophysics (CMB).

Major responsibilities include:

* Develops and executes the in-house ORNL CMB program on
experimental dynamic neutron scattering in biology.

* Promotes local, national and international exploitation of the
experimental dynamic neutron scattering facilities at SNS via effective
publicity and collaborative program building.

* Establishes cooperation with and maintains active
participation in computational work aimed at combining experimental
dynamic neutron scattering with biomolecular simulation techniques.

* Develops neutron scattering techniques and works with external
users.

* Establishes funding and supervision of an independent research
group of doctoral and postdoctoral scientists.

* Complies with environment, safety, health, and quality program
requirements.

Required qualifications are:

Ph.D. plus postdoctoral experience in experimental and computational
biomacromolecular dynamic neutron scattering or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. An established international
scientific reputation, as evidenced by a strong publications record and
invitations to present work at congresses etc. Strong written and oral
communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on
scientifically challenging problems.
