Applications are invited from recent Ph.D graduates to apply neutron
scattering techniques to the study of molecular scale nucleation and growth
processes in clathrate gas hydrates. The goal of the research is to develop
fundamental understanding of these systems, which will enable enhanced

This collaborative project will be carried out between CSIRO's Wealth from
Oceans' Flagship, (with scientists based at the Division of Molecular &
Health Technologies in Clayton, Victoria) and ANSTO's Bragg Institute at
Lucas Heights, NSW. The successful candidate will be based primarily in the
Bragg Institute at Lucas Heights, making major use of the new
neutron-scattering facility OPAL research reactor, with regular visits to
CSIRO as required.

ANSTO is one of Australia's foremost scientific research and development
organisations focused on delivering the benefits of nuclear science to the
Australian community.  Based in southern Sydney, we are now commissioning
the new state-of-the-art 20 MW OPAL Reactor and have built up our team of
scientists at the Bragg Institute to be the leading group of neutron and
x-ray scatterers in Australia.  More information on neutron scattering

The Wealth from Oceans Flagship is one of six National Research Flagships,
addressing long term goals of major national significance.  The Wealth from
Oceans Flagship theme on "Blue GDP, Ocean-based Industry Development and
Growth", has a major focus on development of new technologies to allow
Australia's deep sea gas resources to be exploited.  CSIRO Molecular and
Health Technologies is a centre for chemical and biological discovery which
works in partnership to address key challenges in health and in a range of
industries requiring smart materials.  More information on research

The appointee must have a PhD (and not more than three years post doctoral
experience) in physics, chemistry, materials science, earth sciences or a
related area. Experience using x-ray or neutron scattering techniques is
also essential. Candidates should have a strong innovation focus, good
communication skills, a proven publication record and the ability to work
well within small cross-disciplinary teams.

This fellowship presents an exciting opportunity to be involved in a new
area of multidisciplinary, industrially focussed research. It also includes
an opportunity to participate in a tailored training and development program
within ANSTO/CSIRO. 

Key Duties / Responsibilities

*	Develop and maintain an understanding of the present
state-of-the-art through literature searching 

*	Construct and commission experimental systems for studying high
pressure gas hydrate formation using neutron scattering techniques 

*	Perform hydrate nucleation studies in under various conditions
(chemical, environmental) 

*	Prepare internal reports and publications suitable for submission to
peer reviewed journals 

*	Maintain laboratory organization/cleanliness/safety within the team

Essential

*	A PhD (obtained within the last 3 years) in a relevant discipline 

*	A good knowledge and understanding of neutron scattering techniques 

*	Excellent communication skills 

*	Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, across
different laboratories 

*	Ability to formulate and articulate a detailed scientific research
plan 

Desirable

*	General computer literacy for a Windows based PC environment. 

*	Knowledge of standard software packages to analyse x-ray and neutron
scattering data. 

*	Previous experience or knowledge of clathrate hydrates.
