NIST Center for Neutron Research

The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) invites applications for the
position of instrument scientist in the field of neutron powder diffraction.
The candidate will be involved in the design and development of a new high
intensity diffractometer being built as part of the NCNR expansion
(http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/expansion/).

The objective of the new high intensity diffractometer is to provide the
rapid collection of structural information at long wavelengths. Its
applications are expected to include:
 	- In-situ reactions and real-time kinetic studies
	- Magnetic scattering including molecular systems
	- Hydrogen containing materials
	- Strongly correlated electron systems
	- Very small or highly absorbing materials

The position is open to scientists who hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials
Science, Physics or related fields with excellent experimental,
communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in structural
characterisation and/or instrument design using x-ray or neutron diffraction
techniques is highly desirable.

The candidate will be expected to take an active participation in the user
program including conducting experiments with visiting researchers. The
position will allow the successful candidate to develop a strong scientific
program taking advantage of both the high intensity and high resolution
diffractometers at NCNR, as well as well as its many other facilities.
Collaborations with visiting scientists, NCNR staff, and other scientists at
NIST are highly encouraged providing a rich and rewarding scientific
atmosphere. Appointment will initially be for two years with the possibility
of extension for outstanding performance. Salary is in the range from
$57,000 to $80,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Expressions
of interest along with a resume should be sent (preferably electronically)
