CALL FOR PROPOSALS

You are invited to apply for time on the neutron beam instruments at
the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR).

The deadline for new AND continuation proposals is November 3, 2008.

NEW PROPOSAL SUBMISSION FORM
You must have an account, or create one, on the new NCNR Information
Management System (NCNR-IMS) to submit a proposal. See our pages at
http://www.ncnr.nist.gov
, http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/call/current_call.html and
http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/howprop.html for details. Also, please
complete the Submit Visitor Registration Form NOW if you have any
intention of submitting a proposal and subsequently visiting the NCNR.

Continuation proposals must be accompanied by an experimental report.

Quick Access Proposals may be submitted at any time, but are held to
a higher standard

Approved new and continuation proposals will be allocated instrument
time in the period from January through July 2009.

<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/bt7_new/>BT7 TRIPLE-AXIS
SPECTROMETER AVAILABLE TO GENERAL USERS
In this call, we are offering 50% of the time on the new BT7 thermal
3-axis to users through proposals. The instrument features large
double-focusing monochromating and analyzing elements, and
consequently provides superior signal intensity at a given energy
resolution. Polarized beam operation is available through the use of
3He spin filters in the incident and/or scattered beams.

<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/call/mail_in_bt1.html>MAIL-IN SAMPLES FOR
POWDER DIFFRACTION
We will accept proposals for experiments on the BT1 powder
diffractometer on "mail-in" samples. That is, for approved proposals,
samples may be mailed to NCNR staff, who will execute the data
collection. Up to 25% of BT1 instrument time may be allocated to such
proposals.

Please see our Web pages (
http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/call/current_call.html) for details.

--------------------------------------

Instruments being offered in the current call for proposals are:

--Instruments supported by the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering

Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) - 30 m (NG3)
Ultra-Small Angle Neutron Scattering (USANS) instrument
Cold Neutron Triple-Axis with Polarized Beam Option (SPINS)
Backscattering Spectrometer
Disk-Chopper Spectrometer
Neutron Spin-Echo Spectrometer

--Other instruments

Thermal Neutron Triple-Axis with Polarized Beam Option (BT7)
Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) - 30 m (NG7)
Reflectometer - horizontal geometry
Reflectometer - vertical geometry
AND/R Diffractometer/Reflectometer
Neutron Imaging Facility
High-Resolution Powder diffractometer

-----------------------

Applicants should list publications resulting from use of previously
allocated instrument time. There is a strict length limit of 8000
characters for the description of research section. Note the Tips on
Proposal Writing section in the proposal instructions.

IMPORTANT - Please inform us of any papers published or in press
since August 1, 2008, that have resulted from NCNR instrument time or
from collaboration with NCNR staff. Please send citation references
to julie.keyser at nist.gov, including title, authors, affiliations,
journal, volume, pages, and year of publication.

Additional information:

Monetary assistance is available through an outreach program of the
University of Maryland, for new NCNR users from U.S. universities (up
to a maximum of $500). Preference is given to graduate students,
postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. See details at
<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/outreach.html>http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/outreach.html

Travel support is also available for graduate students not yet
committed to specific thesis projects. Such students may be supported
on a visit to the NCNR to observe or participate in an experiment,
accompanying a university group with a scheduled experiment. See
details at
