Project Description: 

The Neutron Scattering Science Division (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a Neutron Scattering
Instrument Associate. The mission of the division is to carry out and
enable excellent and vibrant science programs using neutron scattering
instruments by supporting a world-class user science program, developing
and participating in signature science programs across ORNL, and
conducting cutting-edge in-house research. The NSSD is responsible for
operating and developing the neutron scattering instruments located at
both the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope
Reactor (HFIR). Research at the facilities will encompass the physical,
chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences. 

The Neutron Scattering instrument Associate serves as the technical
specialist in assisting users and NSSD personnel in the performance of
experiments and analysis of the results utilizing NSSD beamline
instruments. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

* Works with and provides technical guidance to users and NSSD
Instrument Scientists in the performance of experiments and analysis. 

* Serves as the technical specialist for the operation and maintenance
of sophisticated equipment used for neutron scattering. 

* Conceives, designs, and develops improvements or changes in neutron
scattering instrument components or in other related equipment. 

* Ensures facilities are under safe and environmentally sound
conditions, and ensures that NSSD users perform their experiments in a
safe and environmentally sound manner. 

* Develops and presents general facility records, reports, and analyses.


* Proposes, develops, and presents procedures for operating and
maintaining beamline equipment. 

* Plans and leads in the testing and evaluation of new or developmental
equipment. 

 

 

* May give work direction to technicians, craft workers, and less
experienced personnel. 

 

 

M.S. degree in science, engineering or related field or B.S. degree plus
2 years of experience in a science or engineering field. Good
communications and interpersonal skills required. Ability to work in a
team environment required. Demonstrated computer literacy including
proficiency in word processing and communications skills required.
Direct experience working on neutron scattering related instruments and
software is highly desirable. Must be capable of working with scientists
and engineers from verbal or written instructions. Must have
demonstrated the ability to bridge the gap between other technical
disciplines during installation, commissioning, and operations. Periods
of moderate travel and off-normal work hours will be required.

Project Description: 

Responsibilities include conducting independent research using neutron
scattering as a primary research tool, mainly on CNCS (beam line 5), but
also on other beam lines at SNS and at other neutron facilities.

or related fields will be considered. Experiences and knowledge with
inelastic time-of-flight instrument operation, data treatment, etc. on
pulsed neutron sources are desirable, though not essential. Strong
written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team
environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. The
successful candidate is expected to conduct independent research at the
Spallation Neutron Source, the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge
National Laboratory and other neutron scattering facilities around the

Project Description: 

Participate in SNS power ramp-up activities including control room beam
studies, analysis of beam loss mechanisms, development of new techniques
for measuring beam properties, beam modeling and identification of
equipment limitations. Plans, develops and commissions hardware systems
such as laser diagnostics or laser collimation systems to understand and
mitigate beam loss. 

Participates in the control room beam study activities in support of the
power ramp-up. 

Performs beam measurements, performs analysis of data including beam
modeling to understand beam loss mechanisms and propose loss mitigation
possibilities.

Project Description: 

The Neutron Scattering Sciences Division at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory invites applications for the postdoctoral researcher in the
area of condensed matter science. The successful candidate will spend
50% of his or her time participating in research to study the structure
and dynamics of materials related to energy production and environmental
protection using small-angle neutron scattering and 50% supporting
general user program experiments on the CG@ General Purpose SANS at the
High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) in Oak Ridge. The materials to be
studied can include the effects of precipitates or nanophase additives,
ageing, heat treatment, and radiation catalytic materials, or complex
fluid micelle systems for solvent extraction or synthesis of nanophase
materials. 

Qualifications: 

A Ph.D in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field is

candidate should have experience with either neutron or x-ray scattering

Project Description: 

The SNS mercury target cavitation damage mitigation R&D program requires
additional engineering support to plan, design & conduct experiments
that investigate damage mitigation concepts. These typically involve
large scale mercury flow systems with gas injection, acoustics,
pressure/shock loading; they require data acquisition for pressure,
fluid and gas flow, acoustics, video analysis, etc. Reports to the
Neutron Source Development Group Leader as part of the Mercury Target
Development Team. Interacts with personnel at all levels within NFDD and
other divisions in SNS. 

                        The selected applicant will contribute to the
planning, design, preparation and performance experiments conducted as
part of SNS mercury target cavitation damage mitigation research.
Experiments with either small gas bubble injection in mercury or, gas
wall creation in mercury flow systems are being investigated. 

                        Develop and operate data acquisition systems in
mercury flow systems (flow, pressure, temperature, etc.). Assist with
the development of diagnostics to measure small gas bubble populations
in mercury and gas wall coverage. 

                        Develop and operate pressure pulse devices in
mercury systems that simulate cavitation phenomena in mercury spallation
targets. Measure pressures from pulse devices and the effectiveness of
mitigation concepts. 

                        Provide mechanical, fluid and heat transfer
engineering analysis support to experiment design. 

                        Display ES&H understanding and discipline that
leads to outstanding safety performance. Maintain the highest ethical
and professional standards of performance and operates in accordance

 Postdoctoral Research Associate: Virus Structure and Function

Project Description: 

We seek a Biophysicist/Biochemist or Physicist to work on Small Angle
Neutron Scattering (SANS) and neutron reflectivity analysis of virus
structure and function. Arthropod borne viruses (arboviruses) are
transmitted by blood sucking insects and cause some of the most
devastating diseases known to human and veterinary medicine. Sindbis
virus is prototypic of the arboviruses. Its structure is complex,
comprising two nested icosahedral shells separated by a lipid membrane
that protects a core of single-stranded RNA. Cellular interaction and
infection involves dramatic reorganization of the virus surface and
interior and in appearance of the lipid bilayer. These transitions can
be duplicated by exposure to acidic pH. The aim of the project is to
characterize these dynamic changes in solution and during membrane
surfaces interactions with a series of neutron scattering and
reflectometry experiments that employ contrast variation and modeling.
The ultimate goal is to elucidate the infection mechanism of Sindbis
across several levels of complexity. 

The candidate should be proficient in conducting all aspects of
experimental scattering and analysis, data reduction and modeling.
Previous work in either neutron or X-ray scattering is desirable.
