Instrument Scientist - Small Angle Neutron Scattering

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Instrument Scientist, specialising in Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) Instrumentation.

Description of position
The instrument suite at ESS will be developed in close collaboration with the user community and the successful candidate is expected to consult with this community while preparing the design and scientific case of the SANS instruments. The successful candidate will be expected to prioritize, initiate and lead relevant projects in order to satisfy these objectives. Instrument scientists at ESS have the opportunity to imagine new ideas for instruments that will bring the largest gains in instrumentation performance in order to address cutting edge science.

Up to half the time of the selected candidate will be devoted to pursue their own research at operating neutron research centres. Synergies with the neighbouring MAX-IV synchrotron as well as strong links with universities will be encouraged. For especially well-qualified candidates joint appointment at a university in an ESS partner country may be possible.

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in physics, chemistry or biology, experience with neutron instrumentation and neutron science. Preference will be given to those candidates with a recognised international profile in research and direct hands on experience in developing and constructing neutron scattering instrumentation and especially SANS instruments.

The successful candidate will be part of the ESS team and lead collaborations on a European level, you therefore must possess excellent communication and written skills in English in order to liaise with different parties relevant for the success of ESS. Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.

Description of department
The ESS project has Final Preparatory Phase for design before construction. Neutron instruments are critical components of ESS. New instrument designs should be developed to take full advantage of the time structure of neutron pulses at ESS. The primary aim of the Instruments Division is to develop new SANS instrumentation concepts for the long neutron pulses that will be generated at the ESS, as well as contribute to the specifications and design of laboratories that will support the scientific program of these instruments.

Duration
Terms of contract will be based on qualifications and relevant experience.

Start date
To be discussed, but a desirable start date would be June 1, 2011.

Application & Contact
Please provide your curriculum vitae and covering letter in English by entering http://www.ess-scandinavia.eu/open-positions. It is a requirement of our application process that the names and contacts details (e-mail address and phone number) of three references be provided. The deadline for applications is 18th February 2011. We intend to carry out the first stage interviews on the 4th of April 2011, so please note this in your calendar.

For further information please contact Deputy Director for Science, Dr Dimitri Argyriou, dimitri.argyriou[at]esss.se or the Head of the Instrumentation Division, Dr Ken Andersen, ken.andersen[at]esss.se.
