Post-Doc position - Neutron Imaging and Tomography at
the SAFARI-1 Nuclear Research Reactor
Description of position
The Science Directorate at the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) near Pretoria, South Africa, invites
applications for an Instrument Scientist, specializing in neutron imaging and tomography and related analytical instrumentation.
The successful candidate will work in the R&D Division with the primary aim to assist in the upgrade development and
installation of the new neutron imaging and tomography (SANRAD) facility, as well as contribute to the characterization and
utilization of this laboratory that will support the scientific program of this instrument. The instrument suite at the SANRAD facility
will be developed in close collaboration with the user community and the successful candidate is expected to consult with this
community while preparing the design and scientific case of the neutron imaging and tomography instruments. The successful
candidate will be expected to prioritize, initiate and lead relevant projects in order to satisfy these objectives.

Instrument scientists on the beam lines at Necsa have the opportunity to create new ideas based on optimum gains in
instrumentation performance in order to address cutting edge science applications. Up to half the time of the selected
candidate will be devoted to pursue his/her own research. Synergies with the X-ray imaging facility as well as strong l
inks with universities will be encouraged.

The successful candidate will be part of the Radiography/Tomography team and lead collaborations on national and
international level, Excellent oral and written  communication skills in English is highly recommended.


Qualifications
Minimum qualifications is a Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in physics, chemistry or biology with  a strong
background in imaging and tomography using neutrons or X-rays. Preference will be given to those candidates with a
recognized international profile in research and direct hands on experience in developing and constructing neutron
imaging instrumentation. Terms of contract will be based on qualifications and relevant experience.

Description of department
The Neutron radiography project is in its final design phase and ready for start of construction. The neutron
imaging instrument forms an important component of the neutron beam line facilities at Necsa and is currently the
only reported operational neutron tomography facility in Africa and in the southern hemisphere. Research done at
the facility is multi-disciplinary and involved many users from different fields of science.

Necsa , West of Pretoria, North-West Province, South Africa.
