The Scientific Division
Large Scale Facilities
invites applications for the position of a postdoctoral research scientist

in the Department Research with Spallation Neutrons G-A1

The appointment is valid for 3 years, with the option of a permanent position, depending on experience and qualification of the successful candidate.
The payment is in accordance with the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD).

The Helmholtz Center Berlin for Materials and Energy (hxxp://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/) is a German National Laboratory and a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres. It hosts
the Berlin neutron source BER II and the Berlin synchrotron storage ring BESSY II, which are outstanding user facilities open to scientists from all over the world. The department G-A1 (Research with
Spallation Neutrons) conducts an extended research programme aimed at the development of methods and instrument concepts adapted to the characteristics of pulsed neutron sources. A sub-group within
the department optimizes novel concepts by means of Monte Carlo simulation. Expert groups in detector development and neutron optics are integral parts of the department. The activities of the department
in the main focus on spallation-source activities and it actively contributes to the Design-Update phase of the European Spallation Source ESS.

Within this framework the design and construction of a separate beamline at the BER II is envisaged. The beamline will allow for for testing innovative methods and experimental approaches
based on, e.g. Larmor labelling or beam modulation in space and time, as well as for performance characterization and optimization of neutron optical components, such as choppers and detectors.
The candidate is expected to take an active role in the design and commissioning of the beamline, perform neutron ray-tracing simulations in close collaboration with the Monte Carlo simulation group
of the department and to provide full support for proof-of-principle experiments.

The successful candidate is encouraged to conduct her/his own scientific research programme, develop independent instrumental ideas and collaborate with in-house and guest scientists
in a broad variety of subjects in the framework of the HZB research program in the field of condensed matter physics using neutron scattering facilities at HZB in general.

As HZB cares about equal opportunities for men and women scientists, qualified women are especially encouraged to apply. Handicapped applicants will be given preference to others of equal qualification.

For informal inquiries, please contact Dr. Klaus Habicht (email: habicht at helmholtz-berlin.de<mailto:habicht at helmholtz-berlin.de> phone +49-(0)30-8062-42807).

Applicants should send a letter of application, a detailed CV, copies of diploma and PhD certificates, a list of publications and the contact details of three academic referees to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Hahn-Meitner-Platz 1, D-14109 Berlin, Germany, (Email: personalabteilung at helmholtz-berlin.de<mailto:personalabteilung at helmholtz-berlin.de>) quoting reference no. G2011/10.

The deadline for the application is 15 August 2011.
