Postdoctoral Fellowship
Structure/dynamics functional relationships in energy-related materials

We are seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position focused on studying alternative energy systems and materials and hydrogen-storage-related phenomena at the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), Gaithersburg, MD. The NCNR is a world leader in neutron sciences with 24 operating instruments serving more than 2200 research participants/year resulting in 350 scientific publications/year (annual reports available at http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/AnnualReport/). Besides the wide array of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering instruments, the Center operates a variety of complementary facilities, from X-ray diffractometers, analytic chemistry instruments and gas adsorption apparatus, and has access to a wide range of other state of the art equipment through partnerships with other NIST labs. and local universities.
The successful candidate will contribute to research aimed at (but not limited to) understanding the physics and chemistry underpinning hydrogen interactions in modern adsorbent-based systems with a view to their implementation in prototype systems. This is a competitive and rapidly advancing field that offers the potential to contribute to both basic science and applied programs and presents an excellent opportunity for a young scientist to broaden their experience and develop their expertise. The primary tools to this end involve the use of quasi-elastic, inelastic, neutron diffraction and neutron imaging techniques. Examples of recent results can be found here: www.ncnr.nist.gov/staff/craig<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/staff/craig>. The position is available through a collaborative DOE-EERE research grant with Prof. Jeffery R. Long (U.C. Berkeley).
Candidates must have a PhD in a physical science a strong work ethic, good communications skills and a proven publication record. Experience in neutron or X-ray scattering is desirable but not essential.
The position is open immediately and the appointment term will be for up to two years with the potential for extension. Salary is in the range from $55,000 to $65,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
The deadline for the application is June 30th 2012 or until the position is filled.
