[Neutron] Vacancy for a R&D Engineer at ILL (18 to 24-month fixed-term contract)

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is 
Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using 
neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, 
reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific 
instruments. The Institute welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists 
per year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, 
crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics.

The Projects and Techniques Division, which is responsible for the 
development of the ILL's instruments and for technical support, 
currently has a vacancy for an:



*R&D ENGINEER *- 18 to 24 month fixed-term contract - m/f -

/Duties:/**

You will join the Mechanical Service of the Experimental Halls (SMAE), 
which is in charge of the mechanical design of neutron diffractometers 
and the related neutron guides which transport and filter neutrons up to 
each diffractometer. You**will report directly to the Head of the SMAE*. ***

Within the framework of the European project CRISP («Cluster of Research 
Infrastructures for Synergies in Physics»: http://www.crisp-fp7.eu) and 
in collaboration with the European Spallation Source (ESS) based in 
Sweden, you will contribute to the scientific, technological and 
economic evaluation of new concepts related to neutron delivery systems 
and their implementation.

Your job will include:**

AT THE DESIGN LEVEL -- The technical and economic evaluation of:**

- a new technology for neutron guides using metallic substrates and next 
generation supermirror coatings

- solutions for monitoring the neutron flux and the alignment of neutron 
delivery systems.

AT THE IMPLEMENTATION LEVEL: **

- Identification and validation of an industrial structure for the 
implementation of the technology chosen-

Production of neutron guides based on the new technology (metallic guides).

At the end of the assignment, a spin-off company may be created from 
this project.

/Qualifications and experience:/**

You are either a holder of a PhD in solid state physics or a graduate 
engineer (chartered Engineer, Master's degree or equivalent), with a 
sound knowledge of mechanical engineering and possibly of optics and/or 
multilayers. You have a considerable amount of initial professional 
experience (three years).

You are dedicated and capable of taking initiative. You are also a 
creative person and an innovative thinker. You have a practical hands-on 
approach to your work and are a problem-solver with proven interpersonal 
skills.

/Language skills:/**
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure 
that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a 
sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language 
course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an 
advantage.
