Associate Research Fellow
Full Time, 2 year fixed term appointment
The Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials is a world-class collaborative team conducting research in superconducting and electronic materials science and technology. ISEM works closely with The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) to perform research of the highest quality that is beneficial to the Australian research and broader community.
We are seeking an Associate Research Fellow in the area of structure-function relationships in battery materials. This project builds on existing collaborative research between The Bragg Institute's Energy Materials Project and the UOW, exploring the link between battery component structure (including cathode and anode materials) and electrochemical performance of the component within batteries.
This project will aim to correlate the electrochemical properties of the battery component to the crystal structure of electrode and electrolyte materials. Powder diffraction, including laboratory X-ray, synchrotron X-ray, and neutron based, will be the primary method of structural characterisation. Your key attribute will be the ability to prepare and run experiments, including in situ neutron powder diffraction measurement of batteries during charge/discharge cycling. The objective of such experiments being to gain insights into lithium location and the mechanism of electrochemically active phase transformation to assist in the elucidation of lithium transfer mechanisms and improve electrochemical performance.
You will work collaboratively with a broad network of researchers, to help prepare samples for powder diffraction experiments, to run the experiments, to process and analyse powder diffraction data, and to prepare results for publication in high-impact journals.
You will be located at the Bragg Institute, but be expected to spend periods (up to three months per year) at the University of Wollongong.
You must address the criteria specified in the Position Description, which is available from our website. For further information about this role please contact Professor Zaiping Guo on +61 2 4221 5225
The position requires the candidate to obtain successful security clearance from ANSTO. No appointment can be made to candidates who do not obtain ANSTO security clearance.
Applications Close: 23 September 2012
