*PhD position in Physical capture and release of drug molecules by 
clays: X-ray and neutron studies.*

A joint PhD position is available at the Department of Physics at the 
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, 
Norway, and The Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 
appointment has a duration of 3 years, and it is financed by the 
Research Council of Norway and by the NBI. There is a possibility of 
until 1 year extension beyong the 3 years with 25% teaching duties in 
agreement with the Department of Physics NTNU.

The actual research field at the Department of Physics NTNU is in Soft 
and Complex Condensed Matter Physics, and at NBI in the Dynamics 
Neutrons and X-Rays Scattering Group which is dedicated to the use of 
inelastic neutron scattering to the understanding of mobility of 
hydrogen in various systems. Further information is available at:

The theme of the PhD research is "Physical capture and release of drug 
molecules by clays: X-ray and neutron studies". We are seeking a person 
with good understanding of physical chemistry and experimental and 
theoretical condensed matter physics. The candidate will experimentally 
investigate the interactions of drug molecules with materials such as 
synthetic or natural clays. The experiments will involve use of neutron 
scattering, and (synchrotron) X-ray scattering techniques, as well as 
spectrometry techniques commonly used in physical chemistry studies. 
Also some simulation work will be part of the project.

The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in physics, preferably 
with a good general background in condensed matter physics and physical 
chemistry. Experience from scattering techniques will be considered an 
advantage. The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong 
ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy 
interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and 
working in teams.

The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or 
equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or 
B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last 
years of the MSc is required and C or higher of the BSc. Candidates from

The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian 
guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general 
regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to 
participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of 
the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.A contract 
will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related 
duties.

For the 2 first years, the appointment will be made according to the 
general regulations regarding university employees in Norway, where PhD 
research positions are remunerated according to the Norwegian Government 
pay scale. The third year of the appointment will be made through the 
general regulations regarding PhD students at the University of 
Copenhagen in Denmark with a salary of about 25000 DKK per month plus 
full social benefits including pension.
