Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

The RF Engineer will support operation, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of the RF systems that accelerate and manipulate particle beams in the SNS accelerator complex.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Evaluate and improve the design of the RF systems to support the Research Accelerator Division's (RAD) mission to provide high availability (>90%) neutrons for Neutron Science investigations.
- Provide integrated accelerator operations support whereby RF systems performance is evaluated within the context of the entire accelerator complex.
- Provide RF support for the accelerator including occasional call-in and off-normal work hours.
- Perform failure analyses and study MTTR / MTBF data on RF systems to propose reliability upgrades.
- Design and analyze RF structures for acceleration and bunching of particle beams.
- Specify and procure RF amplifiers - both solid state and electron tube devices - and related subsystems.
- Develop upgrades and replacements to address obsolescence issues in the SNS RF systems.
- Develop documentation and procedures for RF equipment and ancillary systems.
- Develop training materials for RF systems and participate in training of SNS staff.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values, ethics, and diversity.

Qualifications Required

- MS in Electrical Engineering with 7 or more years of relevant experience or BS in Electrical Engineering with 8 or more years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated success in working in a team environment in both leader and follower roles.
- Expertise in the specification, operation and maintenance of high-power RF systems.
- Expertise in the utilization of programmable logic controllers.

- Demonstrated success as a technical project manager.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Qualifications Desired:
- Education concentration in electromagnetics (EM) and radio-frequency (RF) theory and techniques.
- Experience in the design and analysis of RF structures for the acceleration and manipulation of charged particle beams.
- Experience in the design of RF devices and transmission line components.
- Expertise in computer programming using languages such as C++ and Labview.

Work Directions and Interfaces

- Reports to the RF Systems Manager.
- Takes direction from the Electrical and RF Systems Group Leader, the RF Systems Manager, and RF Systems Lead
Engineers.
- Interfaces with Electrical and RF Systems Group members, NScD staff, professional peers from non-ORNL institutions, ORNL business services, vendors and visitors.
