About the National Deuteration Facility

The NDF is Australia's national facility for isotopic labelling of molecules with the stable, non-radioactive isotope deuterium (2H) using chemical or biological (in vivo) processes in order to enhance contrast when conducting structural studies using neutron scattering instruments operated by the Bragg Institute at the OPAL Reactor, or using other techniques such as NMR or Mass Spectrometry. A key part of the NDF's mission is expansion of the range of applications of the OPAL research reactor in the study of biological, organic and polymeric molecules, opening up new avenues for researchers in the biosciences, chemistry and medicine in Australia.

The NDF is one of the few open access facilities in the world offering chemical deuteration for Australian and international researchers and is the only such facility to offer both chemical and biodeuteration.

About the position

The Deuteration Facility Chemist will be part of a team responsible for the production, purification and characterisation of small organic molecules, and their precursors, labelled with deuterium using isotopic exchange and synthetic chemistry techniques. The Chemical Deuteration Team enables and supports structural investigations required by internal and external users of the National Deuteration Facility (NDF) that involve neutron scattering, NMR and other techniques.

The ideal candidate will have an Honours degree in Organic Chemistry and further experience in either a R & D or Laboratory Management context is desirable. A solid background in synthesis and organometallic chemistry, some experience with separation chromatography and molecular characterisation techniques would be preferred.

The deuteration Facility Chemist reports to the Chemical Deuteration Team Leader and will be a member of the NDF team which consists of biochemists, microbiologists, structural biologists and organic chemists.

Duties and responsibilities

  *   contribute to operation of a laboratory for production and purification of deuterated chemicals using repeated hydrogen exchange at high temperature and pressure (or novel processes) to produce deuterated precursors followed by modified traditional synthesis routes
  *   contribute to operation of a laboratory for characterisation of the deuterated products
  *   undertake hydrogen/deuterium exchange reactions and synthesis of molecules from deuterated precursors using established protocols
  *   chromatographic purification of deuterated molecules using established protocols
  *   day-to day responsibility for the running of the organic synthesis laboratory including purchasing, maintenance, calibration and other quality and safety functions (area supervisor of the laboratory)
  *   contribute to journal and conference publications as appropriate
