Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

Purpose:
The Infrastructure and Data Management Team within the Scientific Data Analysis Group (SDAG) is responsible for developing the software infrastructure needed to automatically catalog and process the experiment data of SNS instruments. The Team also develops web-based applications for experiment monitoring, and it contributes to other projects within SDAG such as Mantid and the Center for Accelerated Materials Modeling (CAMM). This position will contribute to the development, operation, and ongoing support of these projects. The position also offers freedom to research and develop new tools for
web-based data analysis and interaction with experimental data.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

-- Support the scientific mission of the SNS by designing, developing, and maintaining reliable software to facilitate neutron data analysis.
-- Contribute towards the extension of the live web monitoring and analysis tools that support our users and instrument scientists.
-- Develop solutions to improve our cataloging processes and provide efficient access to the cataloged meta-data in view of automating reduction and analysis jobs.
-- Support and maintain the existing automated reduction and cataloging services at SNS.
-- Support the mission of the Scientific Data Analysis Group by providing data reduction and analysis solutions for our users.
-- Provide documentation and user training for software. Maintain code in a central repository utilizing a version control system. Develop and utilize software quality testing procedures.
-- Will be expected to carry out a research program that involves using their computational expertise in the analysis of results from materials studies with neutrons.
-- Ensure and monitor compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements. Promptly identify ESH and QA issues and communicate them to project and division management, ESH and QA contacts, and/or subcontractor contacts as appropriate.
-- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Qualifications Required
Bachelor's degree in computer science, physics or related field with 5 or more years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree and 3 or more years of experience. Demonstrated experience in developing reliable and efficient custom software in a scientific environment. Must show a record of strong software development expertise and an understanding of scientific data analysis. Demonstrated experience in multiple programming languages, including C/C++ and python. Experience with collaborative/team software development using version control and configuration control management systems. Understanding of reliable software design practices, distributed software systems and computer networks. Ability to work and communicate effectively with teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Qualifications Preferred:
-- A PhD degree in computer science, physics or related field and 1 or more years of relevant experience.
-- Experience developing software at a neutron user facility, synchrotron light source or other large-scale experimental physics project or user facility is preferred.
-- Experience contributing to open source projects is preferred.
-- Experience with Nexus, with databases, and with web application development is desired.
-- Prefer a candidate with strong software development expertise and an understanding of scientific data analysis.
