Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

Purpose:
This Instrument Scientist will be based at the Spallation Neutron Source, and will work with another existing Instrument Scientist to commission, operate, and develop a scientific program (user-based and in-house) for the elastic diffuse scattering instrument CORELLI. This instrument is in the final stages of construction and will begin commissioning in May 2014. Once commissioning of CORELLI is completed, it will enter the user program as part of the instrument suite that makes up ORNL's Neutron Scattering Facility. CORELLI is one of the most innovative instruments in the facility, and will be the springboard to grow into the broad area of disorder in crystals as it can be studied by neutron diffuse scattering.

This staff position will be within the Structure of Matter Group in the Quantum Condensed Matter Division.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

* Develop and implement operation of the CORELLI for studies of diffuse scattering in crystals. Maintains the instrument and coordinates with support groups to ready the instrument for user experiments.
* Contribute individual research toward solving problems in physical sciences using neutron scattering, particularly neutron diffuse scattering.
* Participates in development of new methods for neutron measurements, visualization, and interpretation of the data.
* Represents SNS at conferences and/or workshops promoting its capabilities to the diffuse scattering community.
* Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics in the work environment.
* Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
* Works within a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization.
* Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand, eye and ear protection gear, stooping, kneeling, lifting, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Qualifications Required

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in material science, physics, chemistry, or related fields, with 1-2 years of
post-doctoral experience. Must have experience working on forefront problems in crystallography and related structural science using scattering techniques. Must have experience working with a broad spectrum of people in a research environment. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Candidates must demonstrate a scientific publication record.

Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.

Qualifications Desired:
Experience in conducting research at major facilities is highly desirable. Experience in characterizing the diffuse scattering with computational methods is preferred. We will give preference to candidates in chemical crystallography and materials science disciplines to complement the expertise of the existing instrument scientist. Experience with instrument development, instrument support, software and programming development, particularly at a neutron or x-ray synchrotron facility, is highly desired.

Work Directions and Interfaces

Reports to the Leader of the Structure of Matter Group in the Quantum Condensed Matter Division. Communicates effectively with group members, users, support staff, and management to develop a diffuse scattering research program using
CORELLI.

Measures of Effectiveness

Development and implementation of effective operation of CORELLI, building a vibrant user community for CORELLI, excellent scientific productivity (publications and outreach).

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.

If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov.<mailto:ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov>

Notice: If the position requires a Security Clearance, reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10
CFR 707.4 will be conducted by the employer and a background investigation by the Federal government may be required to obtain an access authorization prior to employment and subsequent reinvestigations may be required.

If the position is covered by the Counterintelligence Evaluation Program regulations at 10 CFR 709, a counterintelligence evaluation may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected
veterans, are encouraged to apply. UT-Battelle is an E-Verify Employer.
