[Neutron] Engineer/Physicist in Neutron Detector Technologies position at ESS

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Engineer/Physicist in Neutron Detector Technologies position.
Description division
The Detector group is part of the Neutron Technology Division under the Science Directorate. The Neutron Technology Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. The detector group is currently focused on performing the necessary research and development for alternatives to He-3 detectors for neutron detection.
Main responsibilities
The main responsibilities for this role will be supporting design phases for instrument projects. Initially starting with work required for one instrument (testing, standards definition and engineering the design of detectors), however the role would expect to additionally support another instrument next year. Further you will also act as detector contact for the Imaging Class of Instruments. Responsibilities will also include implementing service and support for test stands necessary within the detector group, to ensure a homogeneous testing platform.

Responsibilities as service, requirement and project is a part of the position; engineering and implementation will come later. The role is likely to be involved and develop collaborations or in-kind partners.

Qualifications

You are a detector engineer/scientist, who is familiar with advanced detector systems. You have a service-minded attitude and collaborative mind-set is essential. Ideally with specific experience of high resolution detectors and advanced readout systems.
High level technical skills and knowledge relating to detectors are essential for this role. Hands-on experience building, testing and analysing data from modern detector systems is a must, in particular in implementing teststands for readout electronics. A high level of software, programming and IT skills, analysis expertise, detailed knowledge of modern detector systems, familiarity with DAQ systems. Experience with VME (or similar) and knowledge of advanced simulation tools such as GEANT is a plus.

You should be able to demonstrate that you have followed a detector development concept from its inception towards its optimisation. Experience in in-kind or collaborative effort and experience in other disciplines as well as within a large international research institute would be advantageous. You should be able to demonstrate a strong and broad publication or results record.

The position is a two-year temporary position. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
