Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

Purpose:
The Polarization Scientist will be stationed at the SNS and HFIR to oversee deployment of polarized 3He neutron spin filters as well as participate in R&D projects aimed at advancing the application of 3He spin filters at both facilities. The successful candidate will be a member of the Instrumentation Projects and Development Group in the Instrument and Source Division in the Neutron Sciences Directorate and will report to the team lead of the Instrument Development Team.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

-- Developing ex-situ and in-situ polarized 3He spin filters for general application on HFIR/SNS instruments.
-- Deploying and operating of polarized 3He spin filters in support of neutron scattering experiments that require the use of polarized neutron beams.
-- Adapting polarized 3He spin filters for specific applications on various neutron scattering instruments and for individual experiments.
-- Collaborating with internal and external scientists on polarized neutron scattering experiments.
-- Developing other instrument components and techniques for use in polarized neutron scattering experiments.
-- Maintaining a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics.
-- Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of time, extensive work at chemical laboratories, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research.

Qualifications Required

Must have a Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, physics, or other related field. Applicants must have experience in the development and application of polarized 3He neutron spin filters. Must have experience working with other scientists and technicians in a dynamic research environment and have good written and oral communication skills. Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.

Qualifications Desired:
Preference will be given to candidates that have experience with neutron scattering experiments and instrumentation. Prior R&D experience with polarized 3He spin filters at a neutron scattering facility is preferred. A strong record of scientific publication is desired.

Other Job Requirements:
This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing and undergoing testing without advance notification. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report any drug related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result to the Company.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.

If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov.<mailto:ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov>

Notice: If the position requires a Security Clearance, reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10
CFR 707.4 will be conducted by the employer and a background investigation by the Federal government may be required to obtain an access authorization prior to employment and subsequent reinvestigations may be required.

If the position is covered by the Counterintelligence Evaluation Program regulations at 10 CFR 709, a counterintelligence evaluation may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected
veterans, are encouraged to apply. UT-Battelle is an E-Verify Employer.
