Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Purpose:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks to hire a Division Director for the Instrument and Source Division. The Instrument and Source Division is responsible for instrument operations, engineering, and the development or improvement of the future instruments and sources at SNS and HFIR.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Facilitate ongoing efforts to improve instrument operations at SNS and HFIR.
- Lead efforts to improve instrument output, throughput, and reliability.
- Implement design changes for instruments, sample environment, detectors and data acquisition.
- Integrate user input in instrument system design and implementation, and clearly communicate capabilities with a broad and diverse base of stakeholders.
- Identify enabling technologies that will allow for growth in size and impact of the neutron scattering programs at SNS and HFIR.
- Develop a strategic plan to improve the capabilities of each beam line at SNS and HFIR.
- Develop the strategic plan for source development.
- Manage source component design, fabrication, analysis, and development.
- Execute line management responsibilities including supervision of group leaders, budget and business plan preparation, salary planning, staff recruitment and development, employee relations, and performance management; may include supervision of staff matrixed from other ORNL Directorates.
- Represent NScD for various review committees, advisory committees, visitors, conferences and workshops. Will be expected to lead talks, lectures and various tours for dignitaries.
- Assume the responsibilities of NScD Associate Lab Director in his/her absence as requested.
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics in the work environment.
- Ensure compliance with and leadership for environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.


Qualifications Required
Bachelors of Science required in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or other science related field. Must have at least ten years of experience in neutron science or engineering management. The candidate will demonstrate the experience and vision needed to advance the neutron scattering program at ORNL. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with collaboration at all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization.

Qualifications Desired:
Advanced degree in relevant science or engineering field is a plus. Previous experience working in a DOE research program is desired. Previous experience at a neutron scattering facility is desired.

Work Directions and Interfaces

Reports to the Associate Lab Director for Neutron Sciences Directorate. Interfaces with facility users and stakeholders, directors of other divisions within the Directorate, other ORNL divisions, partner laboratories, Department Of Energy headquarters and the DOE site office.

Measures of Effectiveness

Meets goals established in the business plan and Lab Agenda. Provides work direction to managers and staff for technical systems and operations. Operates with the budget and defined policies and regulations. Maintains accurate accountability and operates within procurement authority, absence approval, travel regulations, and staffing policies.
