The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites outstanding applications for a senior polymer scientist position with experience and expertise in polymer physics, synthesis, and characterization, or related areas, with a strong emphasis on nanoscale phenomena and an interest in the use of neutron scattering methods. The CNMS (http://cnms.ornl.qov/) is a nanoscience research and user facility supported by the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The CNMS has a diverse spectrum of nanoscience activities including a nanofabrication facility; research on macromolecular materials and functional nanomaterials; electron and scanning probe microscopies; functional and structural characterization of materials; theory, modeling, and simulation; and benefits from the strong interactions with the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), and the National Center for Computational Sciences at ORNL.

PURPOSE:
The Senior Polymer Scientist / Group Leader will lead the Macromolecular Nanomaterials group within the CNMS and develop and execute a strong polymer program in this multidisciplinary user center with a dynamic staff science program. The research will take advantage of, complement, and enhance ongoing scientific efforts within the CNMS and ORNL. The incumbent will promote and enhance the soft matter, nanoscience, and neutron science research programs at ORNL.

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Formulate and lead a forefront nanoscience research effort in soft matter that takes advantage of existing capabilities in synthesis, characterization, modeling/simulation, and neutron scattering
* Lead an effort in the research and development of well-defined polymers and supramolecular materials, such as branched polymers and conjugated polymers, to elucidate fundamental properties required for the development of advanced materials for energy applications
* Assume line management responsibilities for the Macromolecular Nanomaterials Group, including research coordination, staff development, laboratory management, and ensuring compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
* Manage a dynamic user program in polymer science
* Enhance the polymer/soft matter science program by taking full advantage of ORNL's leadership in neutron science and high performance computing
* Present and report research results and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
* Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: A PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Physics or a closely related science discipline with a minimum of 8 years of experience in research is required. An internationally recognized record of research in the field, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences, is a must. Proven leadership qualities as well as excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience, are essential. The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort are required. Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs is required.
