The department High Field Magnet at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin is looking for a

POSTDOC (F/M) (PHYSICS OR CHEMISTRY) FOR SCATTERING EXPERIMENTS AT HIGH MAGNETIC FIELDS
Reference No.: NP 2016/14

The High Field Magnet Department operates a unique and world leading facility to perform neutron scattering experiments
at continuous high magnetic fields up to 26T – the highest continuous fields available for neutron scattering worldwide.
The magnetic fields are produced by our hybrid magnet (HFM) permanently located at the EXtreme Environment
Diffractometer (EXED), which is a multipurpose time-of-flight neutron instrument capable of neutron diffraction,
small-angle-neutron-scattering (SANS) and spectroscopy.

We invite applications for a two and a half year postdoctoral position in the area of experimental condensed matter. The
position is to use primarily the experimental techniques of x-ray and neutron scattering to explore the physics of
correlated electron systems such as quantum and frustrated magnets, superconductors and multiferroic materials. Emphasis
will be given to research in high magnetic fields. X-ray and neutron experiments will take place both in-house and at
external sources, and bulk properties measurements can be performed in-house as complementary techniques. It is also
expected that the candidate will have strong scientific interests and can perform his/her own research as well as
develop collaborations with colleagues both inside and outside HZB.

The candidate will form part of the team operating the EXED instrument where neutron diffraction, SANS and spectroscopy
can be performed up to fields of 26T and down to temp¬eratures of 0.5 K. He or she should perform own experiments and
support external users. He or she will contribute to the further development of the instrument, especially in the
improvement of its performance and the implementation of new research areas. - Applicants should have or be close to
finishing a PhD in physics or chemistry. Experience in X-ray and/or neutron scattering techniques is important,
experience in high magnetic fields is useful.

Please enclose with your application the following documents: Motivation letter, CV and the contact details of at least
two academic references.

What we offer
Fixed term contract for 30 months. The employment contract is based on contracts for the German civil service
(TVöD-Bund). We particularly welcome applications from women. Preference will be given to handicapped applicants
provided equal suitability.

How to apply
Are you interested? Then we look forward to receiving your application until 8th July 2016 by using the e-recruitment
portal in the intranet (www.helmholtz-berlin.de).
