(ORNL) invites applications for a Neutron Scattering Instrument Associate. The
mission of the division is to carry out and enable excellent and vibrant
science programs using neutron scattering instruments by supporting a
world-class user science program, developing and participating in signature
science programs across ORNL, and conducting cutting-edge in-house research.
The NSSD is responsible for operating and developing the neutron scattering
instruments located at both the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High
Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Research at the facilities will encompass the physical,
chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

related instruments and software is highly desirable. Must be capable of
working with scientists and engineers from verbal or written instructions. Must
have demonstrated the ability to bridge the gap between other technical
disciplines during installation, commissioning, and operations. Periods of

data treatment, etc. on pulsed neutron sources are desirable, though not
essential. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work
in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. The
successful candidate is expected to conduct independent research at the

Biophysicist/Biochemist or Physicist to work on Small Angle Neutron Scattering
(SANS) and neutron reflectivity analysis of virus structure and function.
Arthropod borne viruses (arboviruses) are transmitted by blood sucking insects
and cause some of the most devastating diseases known to human and veterinary
medicine. Sindbis virus is prototypic of the arboviruses. Its structure is
complex, comprising two nested icosahedral shells separated by a lipid membrane
that protects a core of single-stranded RNA. Cellular interaction and infection
involves dramatic reorganization of the virus surface and interior and in
appearance of the lipid bilayer. These transitions can be duplicated by
exposure to acidic pH. The aim of the project is to characterize these dynamic
changes in solution and during membrane surfaces interactions with a series of
neutron scattering and reflectometry experiments that employ contrast variation
and modeling. The ultimate goal is to elucidate the infection mechanism of
Sindbis across several levels of complexity. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

proficient in conducting all aspects of experimental scattering and analysis,
