Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for an Accelerator Mechanical/Vacuum
Technician.  With the United States’ highest flux reactor-based
neutron source for condensed matter research (the High Flux Isotope Reactor)
and the world's most intense pulsed, accelerator-based neutron source (the
Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL is becoming the world's foremost center for

<p class=MsoNormal><b>PURPOSE:<o:p></o:p></b></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>This position under general supervision performs assembly,
testing, commissioning, and operation of the SNS accelerator's
mechanical/vacuum system and related systems, e.g. cryogenic, electrical power,
and instrumentation.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><b>MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:<o:p></o:p></b></p>

<p class=MsoNormal><b>•</b>             Performs
assembly operations and modifications on precision electro-mechanical
equipment.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Monitors
and maintains specialized components and systems during and after
commissioning.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Participates
in installation, testing, and commissioning of accelerator hardware systems. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Assembles,
tests, certifies, and documents the mechanical and vacuum systems and their
components.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Sets-up,
operates, calibrates, and ensures integrity of various test equipment and
apparatus. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.5in'>•             Develops
procedures and documentation related to the design, fabrication, testing, and
operation of mechanical and vacuum systems and their components; assists in
documenting records for assembly, testing and qualification.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Maintains
test and measurement data, travelers, and any other documentation records
related to the fabrication, testing, commissioning and operation.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Uses
electronic and mechanical test and measurement equipment to verify vacuum
system and component performance and integrity.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Uses
computers to collect, record, and analyze data for accepting, operating, and
maintaining the mechanical and vacuum systems.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>•             Consolidates
and records traveler data in a computer database.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-left:.5in;text-indent:-.5in'>•             Ensures
compliance with ESH and quality procedures and programs. May participate in the
development and communication of safety, quality and other procedures for
vacuum and other related systems and their component assembly.<o:p></o:p></p>

a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values

<p class=MsoNormal><b>QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED</b>:<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>Associates degree in mechanical technology or a related
technical field, plus 5-7 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience in mechanical technology or a related technical field
required. Familiar or knowledgeable with vacuum systems, vacuum components, and
instrumentation and associated test equipment (e.g., leak detectors, RGA's
etc.), preferably in an ultra-high vacuum environment required. Familiar or
knowledgeable in the construction, assembly, troubleshooting, repair,
calibration, testing and operation of mechanical and vacuum systems and
components required. Experience in the use of mechanical and electronic test
and measurement equipment required. Working knowledge of electrical power,
instrumentation and computers is desirable. Experience working on accelerator
assembly, installation and operations is desirable. Must be familiar with use
of office automation tools (such as word processing, spreadsheets, and
databases). Must have good written and oral communications skills. Must be
willing to learn new skills as needed to perform the job effectively. Some
overtime is required.<o:p></o:p></p>
