Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites
applications for a Neutron Scattering Instrument Scientist for the Nanoscale
Ordered Materials Diffractometer <b>(</b>NOMAD) instrument located at the
world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source the
Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). NOMAD is designed to study the atomic
structure of a wide range of materials from liquids and glasses to long range
ordered crystals. It is optimized for the determination of pair distribution
functions. The high neutron flux at the sample and the large detector coverage
will enable parametric studies of the structure as a function of external
parameters such as time, temperature, pressure, chemical composition. NOMAD is
scheduled to open the shutter for commissioning summer 2010. The successful
candidate will be a team member to provide operational support for NOMAD and to
develop a vigorous scientific program associated with the instrument. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

duties and responsibilities: <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Will work with Lead Instrument Scientist and Scientific Associate to provide
user support. This will include helping users to develop user proposals,
conduct experiments, and analyze data. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Will maintain the instrument and coordinate with support groups to make sure
that the instrument is ready for each user experiment. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Will work with other staff and research groups at ORNL to conduct world leading
research using instruments at ORNL. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Will work with the team to conceive, plan, and execute upgrades of the

plus postdoctoral experience in material science, physics, mechanical
engineering, or related fields, involving neutron and/or x-ray diffraction, or
equivalent combination of training and experience, is required. Strong written
and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on
technically and scientifically challenging problems are required. Experience
with instrument, software and programming development, particularly at a neutron
or x-ray facility is desirable. Prior experience with structure determination
via pair distribution functions is an advantage but not required. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
