instruments. The Institute welcomes 1700 visiting scientists per year
to carry
out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, soft
matter,
biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. The Projects and Techniques
Division, which is responsible for the development of the ILL's
instruments and
for technical support, currently has a vacancy for the:<o:p></o:p></span></p>

of the NEUTRON OPTICS SERVICE  (Physicist / Engineer) - m/f<br>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span
 style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="EN-GB"><o:p></o:p>The Neutron Optics
Service
plays a major role in the conception, construction and maintenance of
most of
the polarisation and optical devices used on the ILL's innovative
instruments.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span
 style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="EN-GB">Directly attached to the Head of
the Projects and
Techniques Division you will be responsible for the development,
construction
and/or procurement, characterisation and maintenance of all the neutron
optical
devices (crystal monochromators, neutron polarisers, multilayer
mirrors) needed
for the neutron instruments at the ILL.<o:p></o:p><br>
You will head the Neutron Optics Service and supervise
a staff of 16 (4 engineers/scientists, 12 technicians), working in
3 different
groups (monochromators / multilayers / polarised <sup>3</sup>He). You
will be
allocated the financial resources necessary to accomplish these duties.<o:p></o:p><br>
You will work in close collaboration with ILL
scientists to provide the technical solutions to their requests in
neutron
optics instrumentation. You will need to be creative and inventive in
the
production of new and well-targeted solutions in a rapidly evolving
discipline.<o:p></o:p><br>
You will have an advisor role: in the first place to
the ILL senior Management on instrument strategy, and in the second
place in a
cross-boundary role as an expert regularly involved in all of the
Institute's
major instrument design projects.<o:p></o:p><br>
You will also be required to represent the ILL to the
outside world.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span
 style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="EN-GB"><i>Qualifications and experience:</i><br>
You must hold a PhD in physics or the material
sciences, or equivalent, and have at least ten years' experience of
work in the
field, including experience with neutron instrumentation and the design
and
optimisation of neutronic instruments and components in particular. You
should
be familiar with at least two of the following fields: crystal
growing/crystallography, thin films, polarised <sup>3</sup>He.<o:p></o:p><br>
We are looking for someone with good initial
management experience, at ease in running multidisciplinary teams, and
with
excellent inter-relational skills. You should also possess a high level
of
reactivity, a hands-on approach (regular presence in the experimental
halls)
and a keen sense of service to others.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
