will be another year of challenges for the European Spallation Source
project. It is time now to start developing the ideas for the first set
of instruments that will be ready for users from day 1 in 2019. This
means in turn that we will start new collaborations to be added to the
collaborations already in place. With almost 70 people now working at
ESS AB in Lund, there are more than 300 people, ranging from
administrators to scientists, involved in the project around Europe and
beyond.</b> <br><br>ESS is a project that is moving forward and we are
gearing up for the challenges ahead! The land for ESS is secured, we are
currently recruiting the person that will lead the Project office that
we are setting up in Lund and we are also recruiting scientists and
support staff as the pre-construction phase of the facility gets
underway. <br><br>This week, the MoU formalising the collaboration
between the 16 partner countries represented in the ESS Steering
Committee will be signed at the Swedish Embassy in Paris and in another
couple of weeks the first report on the Sustainability policy will be
presented. The policy emphasises that ESS will be built in a
environmentally friendly way which also brings with it lower operating
costs.<br><br>We are also happy to announce three larger conferences
this year. The 4th High Power Targetry Workshop will be held in Malmö,
Sweden in May, followed by the first Science & Scientists at ESS
meeting in July as a satellite meeting to the ECNS conference. In the
autumn we will arrange the first Green Energy for Sustainable Science
conference. You'll find more information on these conferences on our
website <a href="http://esss.se/">http://esss.se</a>. <br><br>To summarise: 2011 will mean new hope,
attracting new partners, new collaborations, new ideas and will require a
lot of dedicated work. All to meet our overall goal: first neutrons in
2019. the 22nd and 23rd July 2011 ESS will arrange a kick-off meeting to
discuss the future scientific goals of the facility as a satellite to
the ECNS meeting.<br></b><br>– It will be a way for us to inform the
research community of the progress so far and to get the science
community involved in the development of the first set of instruments,
says Dimitiri Argyriou, Science Director at ESS AB. A new generation of
neutron facility also needs a new generation of instruments, but to get
that we need input and involvement from the community that will use
them.<br><br>The meeting will start on Friday afternoon with a plenary
session and will continue on the next day. Later that evening the work
will continue in the more relaxed atmosphere of the dinner. We will
ensure that there will be sufficient time for questions and comments
about the ESS Design Update and the development of the first set of
instruments. <br><br>– This is the kick-off meeting about the future
science at ESS. There will be a series of meetings involving scientists
from various fields of research starting later in 2011. Now is the time

Big Science is an important key to a sustainable future, but can Big
Science facilities be sustainable in themselves? A growing number of
involved scientists from a multitude of disciplines seem to think it is
worth trying.<br><br>The European Spallation Source has committed to an
energy programme called “Responsible, Recyclable and Renewable”. The
primary energy will come from renewable sources and the waste heat
produced in the facility will be recycled into the local district
heating system.<br><br>- This is the responsible way of building a
research facility, says Thomas Parker, Energy Manager at ESS. But it
isn't the easy way. We have two sustainability partners, E.ON and Lunds
Energi, that provide us with know-how and engineers. The first report
from the sustainability group is due in March. <br><br>The aim for the
GESS conference is to share and discuss sustainability challenges and

became the second shareholder in European Spallation Source AB when
they acquired 26% of the shares. At the same time three representatives

Denmark, benefiting from the Nordic Data Grid and Danish expertise on

December at the French Embassy in Sweden a number of MoUs were signed
between research organisations in France and Sweden about cooperation on
