The successful candidate will work in the Instruments Division with the primary
aim to develop new neutron imaging and tomography concepts for the long
neutron pulses that will be generated at the ESS, as well as contribute to the
specifications and design of laboratories that will support the scientific
program of these instruments. The instrument suite at ESS will be developed in
close collaboration with the user community and the successful candidate is
expected to consult with this community while preparing the design and
scientific case of the neutron imaging and tomography instruments. The
successful candidate will be expected to prioritize, initiate and lead relevant
projects in order to satisfy these objectives.

Instrument scientists at ESS have the opportunity to imagine new ideas for
instruments that will bring the largest gains in instrumentation performance in
order to address cutting edge science. Up to half the time of the selected
candidate will be devoted to pursue their own research at operating neutron
research centers. Synergies with the neighboring MAX-IV synchrotron as well as
strong links with universities will be encouraged. For especially
well-qualified candidates joint appointment at a university in an ESS partner
country may be possible.

The successful candidate will be part of the ESS team and lead collaborations
on a European level, you therefore must possess excellent communication and
written skills in English in order to liaise with different parties relevant
for the success of ESS. Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in physics,
chemistry or biology, experience with neutron instrumentation and neutron
science and excellent written and oral skills in English. A strong background
in imaging and tomography using neutrons or X-rays is essential. Preference
will be given to those candidates with a recognised international profile in
research and direct hands on experience in developing and constructing neutron
scattering instrumentation and especially neutron imaging instrumentation.
Terms of contract will be based on qualifications and relevant experience.

Description of department
The ESS project has Final Preparatory Phase for design before construction.
Neutron instruments are critical components of ESS. ESS will be a long pulse
neutron source; new instrument designs should be developed to take full
advantage of the time structure of neutron pulses at ESS. Therefore, ESS is
seeking experienced scientists to lead the development of innovative neutron
instruments at ESS.

Location
ESS, Lund, Sweden.

Application & Contact
Please provide your curriculum vitae and covering letter in English. It is a
requirement of our application process that the names and contacts details
(e-mail address and phone number) of three references be provided. The deadline
for applications is 15th April 2011. We intend to carry out the first stage
interviews 10th May 2011, so please note this in your calendar.
