The successful candidate will participate in research to study the structure and phase behavior of fluids confined in porous materials using small-angle neutron scattering technique and gas adsorption methods. Confined fluids include but are not limited to hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide. Examples of the confining matrices include engineered materials such as activated carbons and silica xerogels as well as naturally occurring porous rock (coal and shale). The results of these studies are expected to contribute to the fundamental understanding of the effects of molecule-surface interactions as well as pore size and structure on the efficiency of confinement.
