<p>The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship/Junior Scientist in fundamental physics.</p>
<strong>Description of directorate/division<br>
</strong>The Neutron Science Division supports and coordinates the neutron research by (i) Academic activities such as outreach, education, in-house science activities, research collaboration; (ii) Collaborative research with various partners and local academic
networks; (iii) Industry liaison and infrastructure. The ESS PhD programme and various meeting series such as Science Symposia, IKON, ESS S&S are co-organized by the division.
<p>As far as building the ESS is concerned the Neutron Science Division is responsible for the scientific infrastructure by specifying the required user support laboratories, the sample handling and the user access. In this it help setting the policies on designing,
building and operating a neutron science driven experimental facility.</p>
<strong>Description of main responsibilities</strong><br>
An enthusiastic and strongly motivated postdoctoral scientist with a background in fundamental physics is sought to plan for and conduct experiments using cold and ultra-cold neutrons to investigate questions in the field of fundamental physics. The successful
candidate is expected to:
<ul>
<li>perform his/her neutron experiments in collaboration with colleagues at the ESS or other partners and to strengthen this research area identified as one of the science drivers for ESS.</li><li>participate in the scientific definition and development of instrumentation for fundamental physics using cold neutron and/or UCN sources.</li></ul>
<p>The successful candidate will be part of the ESS science directorate but stationed at ILL, Grenoble, France. In this the successful candidate represents ESS neutron science into fundamental physics towards the neutron science community.</p>
<strong>Qualifications</strong><br>
Candidates are expected to have a PhD or similar in experimental physics (fundamental physics). Experimental experience with techniques involving neutron scattering are desired. The evaluation will be based on scientific qualification. Experience of working
in an international environment is essential. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments
for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of
European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.<br>
