provides participants the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of neutron
scattering techniques using instruments at the NIST Center for Neutron Research
(NCNR) including the disk chopper spectrometer (DCS), backscattering
spectrometer (HFBS), BT-7 double focusing
triple-axis spectrometer, multi-axis crystal spectrometer (MACS), small angle
neutron scattering (SANS), and neutron spin echo (NSE) spectrometer. These
powerful experimental techniques are used by researchers in a variety of
scientific disciplines to probe the microstructure of materials at length
scales of approximately 1 nm to 500 nm and at time scales from 100 ns to 1
ps.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The NCNR is home to world-class
neutron scattering instruments that are available to any qualified researchers
through the NCNR’s peer review proposal system.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>This school emphasizes hands-on experimental training for the
instruments mentioned above as well as a thorough theoretical overview of these
measurement techniques.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Applications of
structural and dynamical techniques will be illustrated by specific examples
drawn from recent cutting-edge research for soft and hard condensed matter
systems.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The course will enable attendees to assess the applicability of the techniques to their own research,
and will provide the technical information needed to prepare effective
experiment proposals.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The Summer School
is sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation, and limited support
for graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty will be available.
