<p><font face="Verdana" size="2">The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a
<b>Senior Beamline Scientist/Engineer</b> position.</font></p>
<p><strong><font face="Verdana" size="2">Description of group</font></strong></p>
<p><font face="Verdana" size="2">The neutron optics and shielding group at the ESS is responsible for designing and optimizing the neutron optical systems that transport the neutrons from the moderator to the neutron spectrometer sample position. The optics
technology involved will involve neutron guides, polarizing mirrors, helium 3 analyzer cells, collimation devices, diffractive elements such as monochromators, etc.</font></p>
<p><strong><font face="Verdana" size="2">Description of main responsibilities</font></strong></p>
<p><font face="Verdana" size="2">The successful candidate will be an expert in optimizing neutron beams, their shielding, and the instrument backgrounds, and will work with the rest of the neutron optics group and the instrument teams to ensure that the neutron
instrument performance achieves the maximum possible performance with the minimum possible background noise. This will require modeling the ESS beam systems right into the instruments, drawing input from the accelerator and target groups, and including all
important physics processes between GeV down to eV energy ranges.<strong></strong></font></p>
<p><strong _mce_style="font-size: 10pt;"><font face="Verdana" size="2">Qualifications</font></strong></p>
<ul>
<li><font face="Verdana" size="2">A track record of cradle-to-grave neutron instrument modeling, from source to sample, with background evaluation and minimization.</font></li><li><font face="Verdana" size="2">Knowledge of nuclear physics processes from eV to GeV energy ranges, and how they contribute to instrument backgrounds at spallation neutron sources.</font></li><li><font face="Verdana" size="2">Multiple years of experience in the use of monte carlo simulations in MCNPX, GEANT4 and similar packages on neutron instrumentation.</font></li><li><font face="Verdana" size="2">Deep knowledge of optimization of these nuclear codes for speed of execution, and the coupling of these packages with metaheuristic search strategies.</font></li><li><font face="Verdana" size="2">Validated results from constructed, running hardware, and a good agreement between the performance of the models and of the as-built system.</font></li><li><font face="Verdana" size="2">The ability to write high quality, reliable code in modern object-oriented languages, especially C++.</font></li><li><font face="Verdana" size="2">Experience of working in an international environment.</font></li><li><font face="Verdana" size="2">Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.</font></li></ul>
