<p class="MsoNormal">The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Instrument Scientist for the powder diffraction suite at the SNS. In this role you will report to the Diffraction Group Leader in<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">NSD, and participate in research activities using the suite of powder diffractometers across a diverse range of fields.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Examples include, but are not limited to: chemistry, in particular the structure and behavior of electrical energy storage<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">materials; physics; materials science; and mineralogy and earth/planetary science using powder diffraction experimental and<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">analysis techniques. This role is also key to safe operation and user support for the beamlines, which includes user<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">assistance as local contact, helping with experimental setup, data acquisition and data analysis.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Major Duties/Responsibilities<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* Champions developments in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further develop the<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">performance of the powder diffraction instruments and expand the user base.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* Develop a high-quality personal research program using neutron powder diffraction, publish research results in scientific<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics, and ensure compliance<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. This position supports programs and facilities at SNS<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">that are operational 24 hours a day and seven days a week.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* This position requires flexibility in work schedule, and support will be needed during off duty hours and weekends, in many<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">* Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* Two or more years of post-doctoral experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or related fields<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* Experience in neutron and/or x-ray powder diffraction and total scattering instrumentation and analysis<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* Experience in developing software and sample environment for neutron diffraction<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* A strong record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* Demontstrated ability to develop an independent science program using the above techniques (a research plan should be<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">* Ability to work with graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and other research scientists from both academia and<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">industry.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">* Self-motivated, with the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems.<o:p></o:p></p>
