The Virtual Neutron Facility is a set of interoperable software packages that allow scientists to simulate neutron scattering experiments. Much like real experiments, vnf has two main parts: 1) instruments, which uses the subpackage MCViNE, and 2) samples, which uses the subpackages for scattering kernels based on modern methods from the theory of materials structure and dynamics. Building on the work of Ernest Rutherford, the British physicist James Chadwick won the Nobel Prize for Physics for his discovery of the neutron in 1932. Neutrons play a fundamental role in the universe and their discovery was at the heart of developments in nuclear physics in the first half of the 20th century.
