The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking motivated candidates for a postdoctoral research associate position in neutron imaging. With the advent of instruments such as the HFIR CG-1D cold imaging beamline, it has now become possible to obtain high-spatial resolution 2 and 3-dimensional neutron imaging data of a series of advanced materials. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in neutron scattering, nanoparticle synthesis, thin film growth, materials chemistry, inorganic materials, fuel cell, and battery materials. This person will also have the opportunity to work with users of the CG-1D imaging beamline, where the research interests are aligned.
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. The successful candidate will work with scientists at the SNS/HFIR and ORNL-based members of the FIRST EFRC, as well as non-ORNL members of the FIRST EFRC to:
Candidates with a recent Ph.D. in Physics, Geosciences, Materials Science Engineering, Biology or related fields will be considered. Experience in neutron and/or X-ray imaging and computer analysis/programming/modeling is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.
Preference will be given to those candidates with experience with using an x-ray and/or neutron imaging beamline. Expertise in additive manufacturing and/or geosciences (petroleum studies, two-phase flow) is preferred. Experience in software reconstruction, 2D and 3D image visualization and quantitative analysis is desired. Neutron simulations using Monte Carlo based software (McStas and/or MCNP-X) is preferred.
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Certain exceptions may be considered. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 12 months, renewable up to 2 times upon performance assessment of candidate.
