Introduction

Working with ISIS scientists and users we expect you to take the lead on coordinating public engagement activities for the facility, planning and managing events with the STFC public engagement team and developing resources for our scientists to take into schools and to science festivals.

You will also oversee all visits to the facility, ensuring these events are well planned, managed and delivered in a consistent fashion. You will also help to develop consistent processes for managing the logistics of scientific conferences and high level visits. Reporting to the ISIS impact manager you will also look for opportunities to promote ISIS at external events and represent ISIS at events organized by the STFC corporate team.

Description of Institution

The ISIS neutron and muon source, based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, is a world-leading research centre which generates beams of neutrons and muons to study the atomic-level properties of everything from soap films to superconductors, engineering to earth science, advanced battery components to biomolecules. ISIS has over 30 research instruments serving an international community of 2000 scientists. Each year over 400 science papers are published based on ISIS research.

As a world-leading research facility, ISIS has a key role to play in engaging the public and inspiring young people with science. We are looking for an experienced individual with a passion for science to coordinate ISIS science outreach activities to a range of audiences.

Job description

List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities

  • Develop a public engagement strategy for ISIS that fits within the framework of the STFC public engagement strategy (www.stfc.ac.uk/1328) and the ISIS communications strategy
  • Manage and develop resources for public engagement activities.
  • Develop and deliver a public engagement training programme for ISIS staff and users
  • Take the lead on coordinating all visits to the facility, working closely with the STFC Public Engagement team to deliver inspiring, age appropriate events for a wide range of audiences.
  • Oversee the logistics of scientific and technical conferences led by ISIS staff.
  • Support ISIS involvement in STFC managed events, by producing briefing notes, literature and organizing ISIS representation.
  • Support other communications activities as required

Contacts and Communication

Reporting to the ISIS impact manager this post will communicate extensively with the STFC public engagement team, scientists and engineers across ISIS and also with external users.

Requested Profile

You will need to have excellent communications skills, demonstrated in a scientific environment. You will need some experience in event management.

You will also need to be well-organised, enthusiastic, capable of taking projects from initial idea to finished product, and be able to work independently and as part of a team. Experience of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite software is desirable.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level in a scientific discipline

Desirable:

  • Further qualification in science communication

Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

  • Experience of communicating complex science through a wide range of media
  • Event management experience
  • Understanding of the public engagement landscape and key issues in this area
  • Ability to build relationships quickly and confidently in all levels of the organisation
