Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks to hire a Group Leader for the Thin Films and Nano-Structures Group, in the Quantum Condensed Matter Division at the Neutron Sciences Directorate.

Description of Institution

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Job description

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Thin Films and Nanostructures Group staff activities and program development involving large scale, nanoscale or meso-scale structures in hard matter.
  • Supervise staff of existing polarized neutron reflectometer instrument at SNS, and SANS instruments at HFIR, as appropriate.
  • Grow the neutron scattering directorate capabilities, including the spectrometer development, sample environment, novel measurement techniques, software and personnel.
  • Increase the size and productivity of the user community by engaging the users through workshops, outreach activities and engagement with other ORNL user facilities, and by engaging the synchrotron user community in x-ray/ neutron complementarity.
  • Will be expected to pursue own scientific research through existing or new FWP and LDRD programs.
  • Identify and pursue synergies with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) and JINS staff in developing programs and performing scientific research with ORNL.
  • Represent the group and NScD before various review committees, advisory committees, and visitors; and at conferences, workshops, invited talks, lectures and technical meetings. Will be expected to lead talks, lectures and various tours for visitors or dignitaries as required.
  • Serve as a member of external review teams, editorial boards, advisory committees and conference organizing committees.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics in the work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with and leadership for environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements and help to lead a strong safety culture at ORNL.

Work Directions and Interfaces
Reports to the Quantum Condensed Matter Division Director for the Neutron Sciences Directorate. Interfaces with facility users and stakeholders, directors of other divisions within the Directorate, other ORNL divisions, partner laboratories, Department of Energy headquarters and the DOE site office.

Measures of Effectiveness
Meets goals established in the business plan and Lab Agenda. Provides work direction to managers and staff for technical systems and operations. Operates with the budget and defined policies and regulations. Maintains accurate accountability and operates within procurement authority, absence approval, travel regulations, and staffing policies.

Requested Profile

Qualifications Required
PhD required in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or other science related field. Must have at least fifteen years of neutron scattering sciences experience. It is expected that the candidate will demonstrate the experience and vision needed to advance the thin films and nanostructures program ORNL. Must have a strong scientific record of working with magnetism and polarized neutrons. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization. Must have a previous strong record in engaging faculty and university groups.

Qualifications Desired
Previous experience with developing strategies for neutron scattering is preferred. Previous experience working in a DOE research program is preferred. Previous experience as a Group Leader at a National Laboratory or management experience at a neutron scattering/accelerator facility.
