Introduction
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe’s leading facility for scientific research using neutrons. Every year the ILL welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists to carry out world-class research on its experimental stations (known as “instruments”). The Reactor Division, whose role is to produce the neutrons needed to supply the ILL’s scientific instruments, is responsible for operating all the technical installations associated with the reactor. It currently has a vacancy for a: Mechanical Engineering Technician (m/f) – Permanent position
Job description

Duties:
As a member of the Operations Group, which has round-the-clock responsibility for reactor operations, you will join one of the group’s six shift teams (each comprising a shift leader and four operations technicians) as Shift mechanical engineering technician, after undergoing statutory training to obtain the necessary certification.

Your main duties will be to:

  • operate the reactor installations (preparation of hydraulic, electrical and miscellaneous fluid circuits),
  • monitor, repair and make the reactor installations secure,
  • prepare and conduct periodic tests and reactor startup tests,
  • draft operating procedures and instructions,
  • design and implement modifications to improve operating conditions.

You will work shifts on a rota basis (2 × 12h).

Requested Profile

Qualifications and experience:
You have an NVQ Level 4 or equivalent qualification (e.g. BTEC HND) in a related area (e.g. mechanical engineering or industrial automation) applicable in an industrial/nuclear context, as well as at least two or three years’ practical experience in an industrial setting.
You have a methodical and meticulous approach to your duties and possess good writing skills. You are able to work independently or as part of a team, have a strong service-oriented attitude and are able to take initiative while complying with regulatory requirements.

Language skills:
The position requires knowledge of French, as an international research centre, you must be able to communicate in basic English. Knowledge of German is an advantage.
