We are looking to recruit enthusiastic Software Developers to develop enterprise systems and work closely with fellow engineers and scientists to provide software to support the business of science. The role will be based within the ISIS Computing Business Apps team at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Oxford.

List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities

You will be involved in all aspects of the software development throughout the project lifecycle, from initial requirements analysis through to maintenance. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with fellow Software Engineers in the team to design, code, test and deploy software.
  • Delivering significant software modules in an agile development environment.
  • Working with customers as they try out and accept our applications, advising and assisting as necessary.
  • Providing support to customers around the world (internal and external to the organisation).
  • Preparing and delivering training to internal customers.

Contacts and Communication

You will work with fellow Software Developers in the team on a day-to-day basis. The team consists of both backend Java EE developers and frontend developers using ASP.NET (C#) with JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, etc.
You will also have regular contact with internal customers by email, over the phone and in person. These customers are primarily in the same department but are increasingly from across the whole organization.
You will need to provide support to external customers (scientists from around the world) on a regular basis primarily by email.
There are opportunities for working with similar organisations in other countries and some of the software we develop and support is part of a European collaboration.

Requested Profile



  • Degree, BSc (min 2.1), or equivalent qualification or relevant experience


  • Degree, BSc (min 2.1), in computing related subject

Knowledge and Experience


  • Solid understanding of the theory underpinning object-oriented programming and relational databases
  • Experience in object oriented software development and support using either the enterprise Java technologies or the enterprise .NET technologies (with C#)
  • Experience of Java EE (or similar) for backend development and/or Experience of web development (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript) including using frontend frameworks (e.g. AngularJS), web services (e.g. SOAP/RESTful), and frontend task runners and testing frameworks.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of agile software development


  • Experience of SQL and Oracle database environments or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge and be effective in supporting and developing them
  • Experience of testing / TDD / Continuous Integration (CI) and related tools
  • Knowledge of modelling and design tools such as UML
  • Experience of Microsoft SharePoint development including knowledge and/or experience of related tools such as PowerShell and SharePoint specific API.
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems for website maintenance
  • Knowledge of performance profiling and troubleshooting
