The Diffraction Group in the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) of the NScD operates single crystal and powder diffraction instruments addressing a range of problems in chemistry and materials research. Areas of research supported by the group include the structure and behavior of electrical energy storage materials and systems, fundamentals of structure under pressure and/or temperature conditions, and the effects of processing conditions on material performance. The Scientific Data Analysis Group in the Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization (NDAV) Division develops software and hardware for the reduction and analysis of data taken on SNS and HFIR neutron scattering instruments. The group works closely with the Data Acquisition and Controls teams, who operate the computer systems on the neutron scattering instruments, as well as with the Technology Integration group from the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF).
The Diffraction group in CEMD and the Scientific Data Analysis Group in NDAV have an immediate opening for a joint postdoctoral position focused on developing and demonstrating in situ neutron total scattering techniques at the high-flux instrument NOMAD for catalytic reactions and other energy materials phenomena. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative team to adapt gas flow cells and time-resolved/stroboscopic data reduction capabilities for use in scattering experiments. This post represents an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral scientist to develop expertise, broaden experience and to interact with leading scientists from around the world.
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or other related science field is required. Programming proficiency in Python, C++, and/or Fortran is required. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Candidates should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels. The ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team is a critical asset.
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.
Previous experience in neutron and/or X-ray scattering and catalysis and/or interfacial chemistry science is desired. Candidates with total scattering (local structure) expertise (including data modeling programs) and candidates with experience in stroboscopic experimental methods (including modeling/simulation techniques) are highly encouraged to apply.
