CEMD has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research associate to work on a project to study the dynamics of hydrogen and hydrogen loaded systems under high pressure and possibly low temperature using inelastic neutron techniques. The successful candidate will work to closely with ORNL CEMD scientists to develop new high-pressure devices suitable for integration into existing neutron spectrometers, design experiments, analyze data and publication of the results. The experiments will include studies of dynamics, mainly of hydrogen containing materials in the quasielastic and vibrational regimes, in particular the VISION spectrometer.
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) within NScD operates a wide variety of neutron scattering diffractometers (including a dedicated high pressure diffractometer), inelastic spectrometers, SANS and reflectometry instruments. Current areas of research include structural studies of hydrogen loaded systems under extreme pressure/temperature up to 100 GPa (1 Mbar). Other more general areas of research include, the structure and dynamics of electrical energy storage materials and systems, the performance of engineering materials under varying environments, fundamentals of structure under extreme pressure and/or temperature conditions, and the effects of processing conditions on material performance.
A Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or other related science fields is required. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Candidates should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels. The ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team is a critical asset.
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.
A strong background in hands-on experimental condensed matter physics, experimental chemistry, or experimental materials science, and a proven track record in neutron scattering or high pressure research would be a distinct advantage.
